History

The Zharkent Mosque, also known as the Zharkent-Aulie Mosque, was constructed in the late 19th century, between 1887 and 1892. It was commissioned by a wealthy Dungan merchant named Vali Akhun Yuldashev.

The Dungans are a Muslim ethnic group originally from China, and their influence is evident in the mosque’s unique architectural style, which combines traditional Islamic elements with Chinese and Central Asian motifs.

The mosque was designed by the Chinese architect Hon Piquet, who brought a distinctive Chinese flair to the structure. Unlike typical mosques, the Zharkent Mosque features wooden columns, intricate carvings, and vibrant colors reminiscent of Chinese pagodas. This fusion of styles makes the mosque a unique and fascinating example of cultural syncretism.
