Kazakhstan is one of the most underrated countries with a huge number of attractions. The main tourist season begins in April and ends in November. However, winter travel in Kazakhstan is no less exciting. The Almaty region is the most popular region for travellers and is located in the southern part of the country where the climate is very pleasant all year round. The southern parts of the country, where winters are not extremely cold, also include cities such as Shymkent and Turkistan with its best cultural and natural heritage such as Aksu Zhabagly, Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Mausaleum, Aral Sea, Bonkonur Cosmodrome and visit local communities.

Western Kazakhstan, especially the Mangystau region, is recommended to visit in spring or autumn. The best attractions of the Mangystau region, such as the Ustyurt Plateau, Bozjyra Tract, Sherkala Mountains, are very hot in summer and challenging for hiking and trekking.

The coldest part of Kazakhstan is the central and northern part which includes Pavlodar, Khostanai, Semey, Oskemen, Karagandy, Petropavl and the capital Astana. Astana is one of the coldest capitals in the world after Ulaanbaatar. Winter here is very cold and it is not recommended to drive on the highways as they can be blocked by storms.

But this part of the country has its gems and is well worth a visit. Astana offers a city tour with visits to the main highlights of the city. Tours around Asatana include visiting Alzhir women’s prison, visiting traditional villages and meeting local people, visiting Burabai National Park in Kokshetau and more. The best winter activities in the region are ice fishing, visiting a frozen lake, hiking and a short horse trek like the local herders.

The Almaty region is one of the most visited parts of Kazakhstan and it is more than worth it. In winter Almaty offers skiing and snowboarding at the Shymbulak ski resort. You can also go hiking or horse riding. The snow-capped Ile-Alatau mountains are beautiful all year round.

Most of the attractions in the Almaty region are accessible during the winter time so you can still visit the Kolsai Lakes National Park, Charyn Canyon, Altyn Emel National Park, Big Almaty Lake and of course Almaty City Tours who can offer a great city tour.
