Lake Alakol is a beautiful lake located in Kazakhstan, specifically in the Balkhash-Alakol Basin in the Almaty and Shyghyz regions in east central Kazakhstan. It is also referred to as the “motley lake” due to its ever-changing colors based on the weather and position of the sun. The lake has medicinal properties and is known for its healing qualities, which have been acknowledged since the time of the Silk Road. In fact, Lake Alakol was selected as one of the top 10 tourist destinations in Kazakhstan in 2021.

The Alakol Biosphere Reserve was designated by UNESCO in 2013 as part of its “Man and the Biosphere” programme.

The surface area of Lake Alakol is approximately 2,650 square kilometers, making it quite expansive. It has a maximum depth of 54 meters and a volume of 58.6 cubic kilometers. The lake’s elevation is 347 meters above sea level. The southern part of Lake Alakol is freshwater, while the northern part is mineralized by underground saline springs.

The largest island in Alakol Lake is Ul’kun-Aral-Tyube. It is located in the middle of the lake.

The lake serves as an important breeding and nesting ground for various wetland birds, including the relict gull. In fact, the Alakol State Sanctuary and Alakol Biosphere Reserve were established to protect the lake and its surrounding area, which is home to a variety of fish, animals, and birds. The reserve is known for its diverse birdlife, including flocks of flamingos on Piski Island.

Lake Alakol offers a range of activities for visitors. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy water skiing, riding scooters, paragliding, and even horseback riding. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the lake features unique black sand and shungite pebble beaches, providing a picturesque setting for leisurely sunbathing and relaxation.

To get to Lake Alakol, there are multiple routes available. The most popular route is a 3-4 day trek starting in Karakol and ending in Aksu, where you can arrange transportation back to Karakol. Another option is to start in Aksu and head to Altyn Arashan first, then hike or go on horseback to Lake Alakol. It is also possible to hire an off-road vehicle to take you from Aksu to Altyn Arashan, reducing the effort required for reaching the lake.

The best time to visit Lake Alakol is between July and September when the weather is most favorable and the wildflowers are in bloom. However, if you prefer to avoid crowds and have a more adventurous experience, you can visit during the shoulder seasons from May to June or September to mid-October, although the weather may be less predictable during these times.

Whether you are interested in exploring the natural beauty, birdwatching, or enjoying various outdoor activities, Lake Alakol offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors. Its stunning landscapes, medicinal properties, and unique ecosystem make it an attractive destination in Kazakhstan.
