Kaindy Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations, which is also known as ‘Birch Lake’ or ‘Landslide Lake’, is a stunning natural wonder. It is located 130 kilometres east-southeast of of Almaty at an altitude of 2000 metres above sea level. It is 400 metres long, 150 metres wide and nearly 30 metres deep, that makes it an impressive sight for scuba enthusiast.

The name “Kaindy” means “Birch” in Kazakh. The reason for this name is the magnificent birch grove, which is located 5 km from the lake itself.  The Kaindy is quite young compared to other lakes in Kazakhstan. Lake Kaindy was formed as a result of a large limestone landslide caused by the 1911 earthquake. The earthquake created a natural dam that blocked the gorge and allowed the lake to fill with water from a mountain river.

Natural elements, though destructive, have played a part in creating this stunning region. The emerald waters of the lake, framed by coniferous forests, are fabulously beautiful. A distinctive feature of Kaindy is the spruce trees that rise directly from the water. For decades, the sharpened trunks have stood in the water like the spears of a sunken army, attracting the attention of travellers from all over the world. The lower branches were preserved almost in their original form due to the low water temperature, and the sun and wind did not spare the tops of the trees, literally exposing them. Because of this phenomenon, Lake Kaindy is also called the “Sunken forest”.

In recent years, Lake Kaindy has become a popular international tourist destination. During the winter season it is famous for ice diving and trout fishing. Diving enthusiasts are attracted by the clear, cold waters of the lake and the opportunity to explore the unique underwater forest. The lake offers a truly unforgettable experience for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

In addition to Lake Kaindy, there are other attractions in the area that are well worth a visit. The Kolsai Lakes, known as the “Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan”, are a system of three lakes located within the Kolsai Lakes National Park. These lakes are famous for their crystal clear waters and breathtaking views of forests, hills and snow-capped mountain peaks reflected in the lakes. Charyn Canyon and Altyn Emel National Park are also part of the Kazakhstan’s “Golden Triangle” and well worth exploring.

It is important to note that Lake Kaindy receives fewer visitors than other nearby attractions. This is probably due to its remote location and more difficult access. However, those who choose to visit Lake Kaindy will be rewarded with a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, away from the crowds often found in other tourist spots.

The lake is a source of wild delight and wonder in any season. But the best time to come here is, of course, summer. In the warmer months, yurts and tents are set up along the shore and you can stay overnight on specially equipped viewing platforms. When the weather is good, small markets are set up on the shore of the lake, where local people sell both home-made and store-bought products.

Winter Kaindy will enchant those who dare to come without fear of the cold. And it’s well worth seeing the winter lake in its snow-white, crisp clothes.

As the lake is close to the border with Kyrgyzstan, you will need to take identification with you. Kaindy is also part of the Kolsai Lakes National Park, which requires an environmental fee to enter.
