Aktau

History

Aktau, which means “white mountain” in Kazakh, was founded in 1961 as a Soviet mining town. The city was initially named Shevchenko after the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who was exiled here in the 19th century.

Aktau’s history is closely tied to the discovery of uranium deposits in the region, leading to its rapid development during the Soviet era. After Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, the city reverted to its original name, Aktau.
