Kok Tobe is a mountain located in the south-eastern part of the city of Almaty. It is one of the main attractions of the city and is included in the list of must-sees for visitors to the city. After climbing to the top of Kok Tobe Hill, a panoramic view of the city of Almaty opens up.
Historically, Kok Tobe was called Verigin until the 1960s. It was a favourite place for the city’s residents to celebrate May Day in the summer and go skiing and sledging in the winter.
Construction of the Almaty TV tower on Kok Tobe began in 1978, and due to the loose soil of the area, the tower, made of metal girders and an aluminium body, reached a height of 372 metres. In 2001, the tower was renovated and began broadcasting 14 television and 14 radio channels.
Kok Tobe is not just a mountain; it also offers various recreational activities. Kok Tobe Park, located at the top of the mountain, is a popular recreation area with many attractions. The park features an apple-shaped “wishing fountain”, playgrounds, a climbing wall, a ferry and a ropes course. The park also offers stunning views of Almaty from the cable car and observation decks.
Kok Tobe also has several restaurants where visitors can enjoy delicious foods such as Abay restaurant, Inzhu restaurant, and Montoverde café. These restaurants offer a variety of cuisines including European, Eastern European, Pan-Asian and traditional Kazakh.
In addition to attractions and restaurants, Kok Tobe has a Beatles monument with bronze statues of four members of the group. The monument is a popular photo spot for visitors.
Kok Tobe can be reached by cable car from the city centre. The ride takes about six minutes and offers a panoramic view of the city. The mountain can also be reached by car or on foot.
In general, Kok Tobe is a must-see place in Almaty. With spectacular views, entertainment activities and restaurants, it offers a unique experience for visitors and tourists. Whether you are looking for natural beauty, sightseeing or local cuisine, Kok Tobe has something for everyone.
